“I chose artists whose work I admire, but more so, whose work I knew would speak to one another effortlessly, as if we all painted in communion.”
-Lady Henze
Whenever I curate a show, I am always seeking to create an experience that is playful, relaxed, and full of color. In my own work, I paint about nostalgia and memory, found in things like the candy store and making art as a child. Thus the idea of the paper chain for this show was conceived. The simple act of connecting through repetition, elevated by the fact that all the paper was hand painted by me. A deconstruction of meticulous work re-imagined through the lens of a child. I chose artists whose work I admire, but more so, whose work I knew would speak to one another effortlessly, as if we all painted in communion. The title “Candy Crush” again ties in to themes in my work, there's nothing more colorful and nostalgic than candy. I also knew our work would lend itself to the colors and shapes found in sweet shops. My idea of having a “candy store” at the opening is an effort to viscerally connect the viewer to the theme of the show and allow everyone to have fun and participate.
